Summer, sunshine & sunglasses…

Sunglasses are an important part of caring for your eyes during the summer, but why is that? Are some types better than others? Let’s take a closer look at why wearing sunglasses is so beneficial for your eyes.

Polarised vs standard sunglasses

UV rays from the sun can cause a lot of damage to your eyes over years of exposure, contributing to the development of eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. High quality sunglasses will block out 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays, giving your eyes the optimal level of protection from their harmful effects. All of our sunglasses across our stores offer full UV protection, but what about protection from glare?

What are polarised lenses?

Glare is caused by horizontal light bouncing off a reflective, flat surface such as water, snow, buildings, cars or tarmac. In many situations, this blinding light can be dangerous, especially when driving.

Polarised lenses help to reduce this glare from bright sunlight, by only allowing vertical light waves through to your eyes and blocking the horizontal light waves that causes discomfort to the eyes and also offer UV protection.

Benefits of polarised lenses

The benefits of polarised lenses make them one of the most popular options for sun protection amongst our patients.

If you’re out on the water, playing sports like golf, or driving in the sun, it’s all too easy to end up with a headache from eye strain, or to find yourself squinting in the face of glare from bright sunlight, tainting your visual experience.

Polarised lenses can improve your vision by increasing contrast and acuity, so you can experienced improved depth perception, clarity of vision and enjoy your surroundings, whatever you are doing, without discomfort.
